Professor Farid N. Najm has been appointed as Chair of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2009.

Professor Najm joined The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1999. He received his BE degree from the American University of Beirut, and his MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to coming to U of T, he held a faculty position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1992-1999). He also worked in the private sector, at the Semiconductor Process and Design Centre at Texas Instruments (1987-1992).

He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), holds 2 patents, has authored 3 books, 36 journal publications and over 90 conference proceedings.

From 2004-2007, Professor Najm served as Vice-Chair of ECE where he was responsible for administrative leadership of the Department’s Awards Committee, the Mentoring program and the Research Computing Task Force. Working closely with the Chair, he played a key role in implementing the current governance structure of the Department and provided valuable input to Departmental budget planning and academic hiring.

Professor Jonathan Rose‘s term as Chair of ECE ends June 30, 2009.
