Civil Engineering graduate student Robert Stupka is among 10 University of Toronto students selected to participate in the 15th annual United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for 2009.

The convention, which runs December 7-18, brings together 190 representatives from countries to Copenhagen to work towards an agreement on a new climate protocol that will replace the Kyoto Protocol. Participants will be asked to map our climate future.

“Sustainability and engineering is an important part of our professional obligations because it affects both public safety and client risk,” said Stupka. “The built environment we design is both affected by and contributes to climate change.  This is a great opportunity to increase the awareness about climate change and the negotiations as well as to showcase the work done by faculty, student groups and alumni in the areas of engineering and sustainability.”

Leading up to the convention, Stupka will coordinate events to engage faculty, students and alumni on issues surrounding climate change. This includes a panel discussion on November 12 in the Mechanical Engineering Building, Room 102 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to engage the University community on climate change that will also serve as a fundraiser.
