June 19, 2009

On June 19, 2009, the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering will award degrees to 810 undergraduate and more than 100 graduate students. These students will join the prestigious group of 40,000 Skule™ alumni.

Convocation is a time of promise, purpose and celebration. Promise for our graduating students as they embark on the next stages of their careers, or studies, and set their sights to become Engineering leaders, innovators and contributors to address the ever-changing world challenges.

Former ChemE research associate and pioneer in environmental sustainability Dr. Frank Frantisak will receive an Honorary Degree at the afternoon convocation ceremony. Dr. Frantisak developed the provincial government’s Air Pollution Index and the hazardous substances program, which was the first of its kind in Canada.

The Faculty is pleased to host après convocation receptions to celebrate the accomplishments and promise of our students and the purpose of our dedicated staff and faculty. The receptions will be held at Hart House Quad and Great Hall from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm and 4:00 – 6:00 pm. I look forward to seeing you there.

Finally, please join me in the celebration of another year of academic success by reading the stories of nine of our dedicated Engineering students who will graduate on Friday. The world of the future rests in the capable and creative hands of Engineers and Applied Scientists, and the early success of our graduating students is a strong indication of the remarkable accomplishments to come.
