U of T Engineering's 2013 Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Award recipients.

On April 29, U of T honoured students for their outstanding extracurricular contributions to improving the university’s community with the 2013 Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Awards. The Faculty is pleased to present the 16 U of T Engineering students who were celebrated for their leadership.

Yi-Wei Ang (IndE 1T2 + PEY)
Yi-Wei Ang (IndE 1T2 + PEY)

As the Vice President, Academics, of the Engineering Society, Yi-Wei Ang created a tutorial program that brought in more than 100 mentors to aid first-year Engineering students. He also co-founded the You’re Next! Career Network and started the Engineering Photography Club. He has also served as Director of events for the Nspire National Business and Technology Conference.

Ryan Bradley
Ryan Bradley (EngSci 1T3)

Ryan Bradley has served as Vice President, Finance, for the U of T Engineering Society, a position that required him to manage a $500,000 operating budget. In 2011, he was senior design champion of the U of T Engineering Kompetition (UTEK). Bradley also competed in, and coached, rugby for the Engineering Athletics Association.

Michelle Cho
Michelle Cho (MechE 1T2 + PEY)

Michelle Cho has demonstrated her leadership abilities through her involvement in UTEK and Skulebook. As Vice President of sponsorship for the Ontario Engineering Competition, she led a team that raised $150,000 for a provincial competition involving more than 300 engineering undergraduates. Her contribution gave participants the opportunity to connect with leading engineering firms such as Hatch, Cisco and Suncor.

Shailin Gosalia
Shailin Gosalia (MechE 1T2 + PEY)

Shailin Gosalia has served as President of the Indian Students’ Society (ISS), where he implemented bi-weekly dance workshops and sports activities and facilitated dialogue between the ISS and other cultural clubs on and off campus. He is a mentor to fellow students, and also an active member of the Faculty’s intramural soccer team.

Vivian Hui
Vivian Hui (EngSci 1T2 + PEY)

Vivian Hui has been an engaged student leader, working with Engineers Without Borders, Students for International Development and the Leaders of Tomorrow program. Vivian also helped to establish Eyes of Hope, a club that promotes volunteerism among U of T students in the community.

Albert Huynh
Albert Huynh (ChemE 1T2 + PEY)

As Vice President of Student Life for the Engineering Society, Albert Huynh developed programs to fight discrimination and promote inclusivity. In 2009, he managed the New U Student Leadership Conference, which facilitated roundtable discussions between student leaders across the University. Huynh has also trained numerous first-aid patrollers for campus events.

Huda Idrees
Huda Idrees (IndE 1T2 + PEY)

Huda Idrees is an active member within the Engineering Society, leading various initiatives engaging students and faculty, whether it was as Editor-in-Chief of The Cannon, as their Ombudsperson, or head leader of Frosh Week. What’s more, as the VP Communications for the Muslim Students’ Association, she helped rebuild the organization’s brand image and website. In her current role as VP Marketing, her efforts in student outreach and social media have bridged the brand image of the network’s three initiatives.

Ajay Kochhar
Ajay Kochhar (ChemE 1T3)

As chair of the Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Council, Ajay Kochhar has spearheaded several initiatives, including the U of T ChemE Car Chapter and Impact Apprentice, a four-day competition to challenge and foster Canada’s top 32 entrepreneurial minds. Off campus, he has volunteered with the Oakville Rotary Club, helping with events for seniors.

Layan Kutob
Layan Kutob (IndE 1T2 + PEY)

Layan Kutob co-founded the You’re Next! Career Network, which helps more than 2,800 first-year students each year by providing them with chances to network, develop their skills and access job opportunities. As finance-manager of the Engineering Bookstore, she initiated an online sales system that dramatically changed how hundreds of students buy books and increased sales by 40 per cent.

Jocelyn Light
Jocelyn Light (EngSci 1T3)

Jocelyn Light has sought out organizations and summer opportunities that align with her desire to improve the lives of people living in poverty. She has been an active volunteer with Engineers Without Borders (EWB), working with the Agricultural Value Chains team in Malawi. Last year, she took on the responsibility of recruiting, selecting and monitoring two new EWB summer volunteers from the U of T chapter.

Abhishek Mathur
Abhishek Mathur (MechE 1T2 + PEY)

Abhishek Mathur believes strongly in student development, and his hard work has benefited many engineering students over the last three years. As chair of Engineering’s Orientation Week, he led 300 students in the planning and organization of a week-long event for 1,100 first-year students. In addition, he was the Managing Director of the You’re Next! Career Fair, and is organizing a job fair for 70 employers with 500 possible positions for 2,500 students.

Prachy Mohan
Prachy Mohan (MechE 1T2 + PEY)

As the programming director for the National Conference on Women in Engineering, Prachy Mohan introduced a unique platform allowing students across Canada to help empower prospective female students to pursue engineering. She is also the managing director of the Discovery Series at the Nspire Innovation Network, a non-profit organization.

Zoryana Salo
Zoryana Salo (IBBME PhD candidate)

Zoryana Salo served as Vice President, Finance, of the Biomedical Engineering Student Association and represented her fellow students on the Graduate Students’ Union. She has won the Anna Jamieson Award for her volunteer and outreach work, in support of the Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering. Salo has also volunteered for the U of T Let’s Talk Science program for public school students.

Arjang Tajbakhsh
Arjang Tajbakhsh (ChemE 1T2 + PEY)

Arjang Tajbakhsh has taken on many leadership roles to help shape the university experience for his fellow students in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry. He has served as the Leadership Development Chair of the Orientation Committee, Chair of the Chemical Engineering Ambassadors, and has served in various capacities for organizations such as the Student Curriculum Committee.

Donnie Yee
Donnie Yee (MechE 1T2 + PEY)

Donnie Yee has worked closely with the TrackOne program to mentor first-year students and promote the program at U of T recruitment events. He also promoted engineering to pre-university students through National Engineering Month and Hi-Skule committees. Outside of Engineering, Yee served as resident Don at New College in his fourth year. He held several student-council positions, including Hard Hat Café manager, and Orientation Vice-Chair, Finance.

Peter Zhang
Peter Zhang (EngSci 1T0 + PEY, MechE MASc 1T3)

Peter Zhang serves as an executive member of U of T’s Operations Research Group, for which he hosts seminars that feature researchers from across U of T and Canada. He is also a key organizer of the Operations Research Challenge, a competition for GTA high-school students. Zhang has also played a leadership role in the Nspire Innovation Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the next generation of business and technology leaders.
