Congratulations go out to the U of T Design Team for their win at the Inaugural Water Environmental Association of Ontario (WEAO) student design competition. The team will move on to represent Ontario at the Water Environment Federation’s Annual Technical Exhibition in October.

The team was composed of:
Sherif Kinawy, PhD Candidate, CivE i2C
Luccia (Lyutfiye) Gafarova, BASc Candidate, ChemE
Rafiq Qutub, MEng Candidate, Environmental (Chemical) Engineering
Tony Tsui, MASc Candidate, CivE

The competition was held on April 5, 2009 at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto as part of the 38th Annual WEAO Technical Symposium and OPCEA Exhibition.

The competition was for the design of a replacement Sanitary Sewage Pumping Station and a forcemain crossing in the City of Pickering. The project was meant to provide students with “real world experience” by working on an actual design problem and consulting with industrial and academic advisors. The candidate teams were University of Toronto, McMaster University, and the University of Windsor. Having won the first place, the U of T Design Team will receive a sponsored trip to Orlando, FL to represent Ontario at the WEFTEC’09 Conference in October 2009.

We would like to express our deep appreciation to Dr. Barry Adams for being our academic advisor, Bryon Singh, and Djordje Radulj of the Department of Civil Engineering for their valuable technical input and advice. In addition, we would like to sincerely thank the support of our industrial advisor, Hugh Tracy of Delcan Corporation, and Edgardo Tovilla, the Chair of the Student Design Competition at WEAO, for organizing the competition and providing continuous support.
