MIE Professor Greg Jamieson provided expert comment on the implications of allowing automated systems to override human operators as in the case of Washington’s Metrorail crash that occurred June 22, 2009, killing nine people and injuring dozens. It was discovered after the fatal crash that the driver of the train had reported overshooting problems at earlier stops but was told not to interfere with the automated controls.
