Like the 40,000 distinguished Skule™ alumni before you, you will influence the world and make significant differences, large and small, that will touch almost every country. You will be global leaders, set examples not only as engineers, but as citizens of a planet in need of the talent, brilliance and dedication that has earned you the right to be called engineers and U of T graduates.

Graduates: We truly are proud of you. We salute you, and we share in your sense of accomplishment. For faculty and staff, this is the day when we can take pride in the amazing results of our work.

For parents, families, friends, spouses and partners, Wednesday, June 16 marks the fulfillment of years of anticipation, support and hard-work.

Graduates, join us in thanking them for the sacrifices they have made to help bring you to this moment.

U of T Applied Science & Engineering will be awarding degrees to 898 undergraduates and 159 graduate students.

We are very fortunate to have passionate speakers to encourage and inspire us at this culmination of years of well-applied effort, creativity and intelligence. At the convocation ceremony at 10 am, we will be joined by George Roter, co-founder and co-CEO of Engineers without Borders (Canada). George strongly believes that Canadians are passionate about driving social change both within our country’s borders and abroad. He saw an opportunity to mobilize engineers and their unique problem-solving approach as agents for social change. For over a decade he has dedicated his life to building organizations that engage a broad cross-section of Canadians and specifically foster the involvement of our country’s next generation of leaders, like you.

At the 2:30 pm convocation ceremony, we will be inspired by the words of Professor Yu-Ling Cheng of our Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry, and the Director of the Centre for Global Engineering. Professor Cheng has made transformational contributions to the education mission of the University of Toronto. A devoted teacher and outstanding researcher, she recently received the President’s Teaching Award and was inducted into the University of Toronto’s Teaching Academy.

Both honoured speakers understand well where you stand now, eager to travel, practise, research and explore.

And a day like this would not be complete without a special, celebratory gathering. Following each ceremony, a reception in your honour will be held at Hart House Quad and Great Hall starting at 12:30 pm for the morning ceremony and at 4:30 pm for the afternoon ceremony. I look forward to greeting you and all your well-wishers there.

Welcome to the Engineering profession.  On behalf of everyone at the Faculty, I send my heartfelt congratulations to all of our graduating students.
