To all of you graduating on this remarkable autumn day, congratulations. Convocation at this time of year is particularly meaningful because it is marked by both celebration and anticipation. It is a celebration of your achievements as U of T Engineering students amid anticipation of your future – all inspired by the boundless opportunities that await in the new calendar year.

Now, you are our graduates, and we are immensely proud of your commitment, determination and talent to succeed. I share this sentiment with your parents, friends and all the others who love and admire you. And like you, I also deeply appreciate their support and belief in you over the past few years.

This fall, 25 undergraduates and 369 graduate students earn degrees (161 receive MEng/MHSc degrees, 151 obtain MASc degrees and 57 earn PhD degrees).

Each of you is about to step from Convocation Hall into a world that has never needed engineers more. As U of T Engineers, your ideas, energy, imagination and innovations will address some of the most pressing challenges facing global societies. You are stewards of the world and must keep it healthy, prosperous and sustainable. Reach out to the network you have forged here, and look for solutions beyond your disciplines. You have much to teach and much to learn. Collaborate for success.

Our faculty, staff and alumni take great pride in your outstanding accomplishments that we are honouring today and for years to come.

This is an extraordinary time for the engineering profession. There are unlimited opportunities for you to create and be part of. But, for now, pause and reflect back on your years here. And look ahead knowing that U of T Engineering will always be with you as you prepare for your boundless and bright future.
