To all of you graduating at this beautiful and beautifully Canadian time of the year, congratulations. We are slowly winding our way across the calendar to the end of another year, one that has been your final one as U of T Engineering students. Now, you are our graduates, and we are enormously proud of your dedication, ambition and ability. We share that pride with your parents, spouses, friends and all the others who love and admire you. I know you share my appreciation of them for their support and belief over the past few years.

You step from Convocation Hall into a world ready for you, eager for you. It needs your ideas, energy and knowledge. You are now, as U of T Engineers, stewards of the world. Keep it well, wealthy and sustain it with your innovations.

This fall, 24 undergraduates and 291 graduate students earn degrees (99 receive MEng/MHSc degrees, 141 obtain MASc degrees and 51 earn PhD degrees). You are all global citizens, prepared to solve globally meaningful and locally relevant challenges. And you are entrepreneurs as well as engineers. Work well with industry, with government, with society and with each other. You have much to teach and much to learn. Collaborate for success.

And know that all faculty, staff and alumni take great pride in your remarkable collective achievement.

Remember, as U of T Engineers, to embrace difference and diversity — of opinion, of culture and of gender. Increase the circle of humanity that engineering enfolds and enliven it with your own world experiences.

This is a remarkable time for the engineering profession, for the opportunities you will have and will create. But, for now, pause, reflect back on the years here, know we will always be with you and let those memories and that knowledge ease you into a glorious and fulfilling future.
