Alumnus Victor Peter Hetmanczuk (ChemE 6T8) has been named a Member of the Order of Canada. 

The Governor General announced the most recent appointments to the Order, which honours individuals who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to the country, on December 28. Hetmanczuk is among 78 new appointees, and this cohort includes several U of T community members. 

Hetmanczuk is recognized for his enduring dedication and leadership in the Ukrainian-Canadian community and beyond.  

Through the years, Hetmanczuk, who also holds a bachelor of arts from U of T, has taken on a number of leadership roles, including serving as the founding president of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada Foundation, assuming the role of treasurer for the Ukrainian World Foundation and serving as a board member for the Ukrainian Care Centre in Toronto. Among his many notable accomplishments, Hetmanczuk organized and financed volunteer missions to provide medical assistance to soldiers wounded during the 2014 Russian invasion of Ukraine.  

Hetmanczuk has previously been recognized for his longstanding service to his country and community. He is the recipient of the 2023 Volodymyr the Great Medal from the Ukrainian World Congress, the 2022 Taras Shevchenko Medal from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the 2020 Canada-Ukraine Foundation Distinguished Service Award, among many other awards.
